The Library is a much loved space by lots of students and staff throughout the Academy, not only because of the glass wall letting in loads of natural light, but also the wide selection of books on offer for everyone to borrow. The Library is a versatile space with students using it for reading, homework, playing chess, colouring and taking part in special events such as National Poetry Day and World Book Day. We are open for study and quiet reading before and after school as well as during breaks and lunchtimes.
At the Academy we have a wide range of Fiction and Non-fiction, many of which are quizzed on Accelerated Reader. To know if a book is quizzed just look at the spine! If it’s quizzed it should have a coloured dot so you can easily see if the book you want is suitable for your reading ability. You can also check if the books you have at home have an Accelerated Reader quiz by checking here. After you’ve finished reading the book you can take a quiz on one of the five computers we have in the Library! Find out more about Accelerated Reader here, or take a quiz here.
We have a dedicated 6th Form space tucked in the corner of the Library, complete with a table for study, 6th Form books and a whiteboard. The Library is open all day so you are welcome to visit during your study periods. You can check if there’s a Guided Reading session by looking at the timetable displayed at the Library entrances or in the 6th Form common room.
Key Stage 3:
In Years 7 and 8 you will participate in Guided Reading. This is in addition to English lessons and takes place during lesson time in the Library. During this hour you will work in small groups with a teacher to practice reading out loud and discussing books.
Year 7 also receive a Library Induction lesson at the beginning of their time at the academy to allow them to familiarise themselves with the books and resources on offer.
Students with Anxiety:
On Mondays and Fridays the Library aims to cater for students who feel overwhelmed with the noise of the Academy and hosts ‘Quiet Mondays and Fridays.’ Here, we provide a space for you to read quietly, do some homework, revise or colour.
Searching for and reserving books:
Using our online portal you’re able to search the library database, reserve books, write book reviews and see what your peers are reading. Have a look at our online library catalogue here.
The library hosts Homework Club until 4pm every day after school. This is the perfect opportunity to complete your homework or to study in a quiet environment.
We are also excited to launch our new KS3 and KS4 book clubs. Each month our book clubs are centred on a different theme allowing us to explore the variety of excellent literature available; we meet once a week to discuss the latest book we are excited about and take part in other activities. From March-July each year we also take part in the Greenaway and Carnegie Shadowing Schemes. You can find out more about Carnegie Shadowing here.
KS3 Bookclub: Tuesday Lunchtime
KS4 Bookclub: Wednesday 3:15-4pm
There are also lots of opportunities to get involved in Library life. Throughout your time at the Academy you are able to suggest books for your Librarian to buy! The Library is yours so we want to hear any suggestions you have. Furthermore, all students are welcome to join our library clubs, and in Year 8 and beyond, you have the opportunity to become a Student Librarian.
If you have a suggestion or want to become a student librarian you can email the Librarian at: Library@open-academy.org.uk
